Building My Dungeons and Dragon World Part 1: The Basics

 The Basics

So I was planning to get all the basics down before writing this document. Then I realized that it might be better to write this blog post as I did the work, so you could follow my work methodology. If you disagree with or want to improve some aspect of my world-building, then go for it. This is simply to show my way of doing it. That said, let's get into it.

The Name

The first name that came into my mind was "Fandaria." A large part of this was due to this idea for the future of the world. While I am starting with the basics, the eventual goal is to incorporate various fandom stories I am interested in into my D&D world. But the name felt a little on the nose. So I decided to use a random name generator I found online.

After cycling through the list a couple of times, I picked the name "Emerraine" because it sounded nice.

Topography and Weather

For this project, I decided to just use the topography and weather of Earth. This is for a variety of reasons. For one, while I know the basics about how the weather operates in the world, I am not really comfortable enough with trying to figure it out in a self-created world. Additionally, a number of the projects I am looking into incorporating in the future have ties to world mythologies and stories that take place in the real world. Keeping our world as the base allows me to sort to keep these stories in the regions they were originally born from. It is at this point that I feel it is important that I will be referencing pop-culture stories from a variety of mediums as well as referencing lore from the original Dungeon and Dragons game, not actual mythologies from our world.

Next Blog

With the basics of the world out of the way, I think it is time to begin incorporating the actual game into my world. So I will end this entry here and begin work on the first race I want to put in my world: The Aarakocra.
