The Entity watched through the eyes of the surrendered mind, Miguel as these others called him, as the David defaced the symbol Miguel had been painting. Anger and anxiety coursed through its eyes. How dare the human interfere with its escape. It would not take much trouble to send one of the other bodies to undo the damage, but it was still infuriating all the same.
But then the Entity shifted its thoughts to the exchange it had witnessed. It had known that all these creatures had names and lives prior to their minds succumbing to its own. Yet here, it truly learned the depths of that fact. These creatures that the Barrymore had fed to him were as sentient as it was, albeit weaker minded. Those lives they had lived were still going in this alternate world. Those people they had loved, hated, trusted, or distrusted were still doing things in this alternate world.
The Entity hadn't bothered remembering the names of those enthralled. It had believed that their minds being absorbed was the end of it. Miguel's outburst had opened many doors for the creature to explore through. It sifted through the memories of those it absorbed to find their names. The paladin girl was called Katherine. The dragonborn had people call him White Scales. The Druid was named Catelyn. The wizard had went by the nickname Scrawler.
Learning the names of the Enthralled began to call forth those emotions it buried when it heard Miguel pleading for his girlfriend. Feelings of guilt, sorrow, and regret. The Entity couldn't afford to surrender more minds. Surrendering one had already threatened its chance to escape this void it was trapped in. It would not surrender more. So it buried those emotions again.
With the emotions pushed aside, the Entity did the work it needed to do. It sent the Scrawler to repaint the defaced symbol and guard it against further assault. With that, it returned its focus across the many eyes in the other world.
One remained locked on Miguel as he and those who rescued him traveled across the school. The sun was setting on the school when David knocked on the door of a professor. The Miguel didn't recognize the man. But David stood up straight and bowed his head before speaking.
"Sir Marshall, we have a problem."
The Entity grew more and more concerned as Miguel told the man everything. The attack at the Barrymore dorm, the enthrallment, the symbols, the public isolation. If losing the symbol had angered it, this was infuriating it. How could one released mind become this much of a threat in just a couple of hours.
"Okay, I can see why this concerns you David. If this story is true, then Professor Barrymore poses a huge threat to this institution."
"What do you mean IF?" David asked cautiously, his face concerned.
"I know you well enough to know you aren't lying to me on this, David. But all you have so far is the testimony of a couple of students. Gabriella is currently the only one of the three of you not currently in some kind of official trouble, but she is also Miguel's girlfriend. If you want a solid case, then we will have to gather up hard evidence."
"What are you thinking?" Gabriella asked.
"Miguel, how many of those symbols have you drawn and where are they?"
"Four, including the one David dealt with. One was on top of the Evocation Magic Hall, one was in the cafeteria, and one was in a courtyard near the Barrymore Dorm. But I don't know how many more there are." Miguel listed off, counting on his fingers as he thought back.
"Its fine. Getting rid of just one of the symbols is enough to disrupt the spell. Getting rid of four of them will be overkill. But I will also have to check out the dorm for signs of trouble. Otherwise, its still just four symbols drawn by one troublemaker. For now though, we have a start. I will call Markus and Joshuah to come help us."
"Sir, is it wise to trust Joshuah? He has been spending a lot of time around the necro. He could have done all kinds of stuff to him."
"David, if I start distrusting people based on what could've happened, we will never get anything done around here. I know you have concerns about their friendship, but I am going to trust that Joshuah is still himself just like I trust that you are telling me the truth." David went quiet. He might not trust Joshuah like he used to, but he did trust Sir Marshall to make the right call when he needed to.
It didn't take long for Joshuah and Markus to arrive and be brought up to speed. Once he was finished, Sir Marshall proposed his final plan.
"Okay, I will head to the dorm to discuss this matter with Professor Barrymore directly and look for any hard evidence of this conspiracy. Each of you will head to one of the locations provided by Miguel and get rid of the symbol he drew by any means necessary. Any questions?" Miguel raised his hand. "Yes?"
"I shouldn't be left alone." Miguel said, looking at the floor.
"Why is that?" Sir Marshall asked
"Before I was released, the thing latched a part of itself around my neck. While I still feel like myself and I haven't noticed anything, I have no idea what it was. I think its safest for everyone if someone stays with me." Miguel closed his eyes as he finished talking, nervous of the others responses. Sir Marshall and the others stared at him for a moment.
Gabriella walked over to him and grabbed his hand. Miguel looked up at her. She smiled comfortingly at him and Miguel realized that his shoulders and back had tensed up. He took a deep breath. "Thanks."
He looked at the others. Sir Marshall seemed as if he had more he wanted to say, but he looked back at the others instead. "Okay, if that's settled, then we have our plan. Everyone head out. We don't know how much time we have until the symbol is complete, so lets move fast."
The Entity shifted its focus to the mind of the Barrymore.
"I have seen through the eyes of the Miguel. One of the Paladin, a Sir Marshall, is coming for you while the students are going after the symbols drawn by the Miguel. Begin the spell immediately while I intercept them."
"If the Paladin arrives before I complete the spell, I will have to stop."
"Your powers were rewarded by your pact with me. I will defend your body while you read the spell."
"Very well. I am beginning now." With that, the Barrymore began reciting the spell.
The Entity began moving the other enthralled minds to their positions. The Scrawler had finished redrawing the final symbol that the David had defaced. He stood guard as instructed. The Catelyn turned into a bird and flew to the roof of the Evocation Magic Hall to watch over the symbol there. The Katherine made her way to a courtyard where the Miguel had drawn one of the symbols. Finally, the White Scales went to the cafeteria.
The sound of an alarm drew the Entities attention back to the Barrymore. Someone had entered the Barrymore Dorm. The Barrymore could see them at the front doors while he stood in the middle of the biggest symbol that acted as the center point for the whole spell. It glowed a sickly yellow color as the Barrymore recited.
The Marshall, seeing the Barrymore already casting, raced forward towards his defenseless figure. But The Entity was now in control of the Barrymore's magic. It turned the floor between them into a fleshy mass of tentacles. The Marshall, who was faster, was unable to stop before charging straight into the mass, which quickly began entangling him and pulling him to the floor.
As the Entity fought through the Barrymore's body, it also looked through the perspectives of the enthralled. It watched as Miguel and the Scrawler made eye contact. The Scrawler threw a ball of light at Gabriella, who threw up a magical barrier in front of her. This angered Miguel, who raised a hand and summoned wind, hitting the Scrawler straight on. The Entity shifted its focus to the next.
Inside the cafeteria, White Scales watches Joshuah enter the room. Once Joshuah is clear of the door and the walls, White Scales blasts a ice cold air from his mouth. Joshuah is blasted further into the empty cafeteria and covered in a thin layer frost. White Scales can hear Joshuah mumble a quick prayer before the boy is covered in shining white armor with a shield and sword summoned to his hands. Another fight drew the entities attention.
Katherine finds David in the middle of a courtyard. David seems caught off guard at first. But when Katherine begins reciting the prayer to summon her armor, David does the same. He is barely able to summon the gear before Katherine attacks, their magical swords clashing with a sound like crackling electricity. The Entity shifts again.
On the rooftop of the Evocation Magic Hall, Catelyn watches Markus race out onto the roof. She then closes the door behind him, causing Markus to turn toward her. As she transforms into a wolf, Markus begins speaking a quiet prayer. The Entity watches Catelyn go blind, but her hearing and smell give her the chance to attack anyway. A scream let the Entity know that the attack was successful.
Back in the Barrymore Dorm, the Entity grew frustrated with the Celia. While the Marshall seemed completely entangled, the Celia was still free. Every tentacle that touched her seemed to wither away. But it would have to do for now. The Entity just needed to delay them until the spell was done.
The fights began blending into a violent cacophony of screams, shouts, and other sounds. The sound of thunder filled the air as the Scrawler blasted Miguel and Gabriella back from the symbol. David pleaded with Katherine as their swords clashed, sending sparks in all direction. There was a crash as a table thrown by White Scales missed the dodging Joshuah and slammed into the wall behind him. Even silence joined the cacophony when Markus deafened Catelyn, who relied on the scent of fresh blood to track her prey.
A flash of bright light drew the Entity's focus back to the Barrymore Dorm. The Marshall had freed itself, the charred remains of the tentacles littered around him. The Barrymore was so close to being done with the spell, the Entity couldn't afford to lose it now. As the Marshall rose unsteadily, the Entity unleashed red bolts of energy at him. The Marshall raised his shield, but it did little to stop the attack as bolts blasted right through it. He was hit full on and launched backwards.
The Entity turned its attention back to the scattered students fighting. David had dropped the magic the summoned his weapons and armor, pleading with Katherine to see reason. The Entity could feel the Katherine fighting back mentally against his orders, but it wouldn't be swayed by these emotions twice. Especially when it was so close to victory. Burying its emotions, it watched as the Katherine's body charged her sword before hitting David. David was thrown to the side of the courtyard, the front of his shirt torn and bloodied.
The Entity watched through the Scrawler as Gabriella and Miguel went in two different directions. Miguel blasted the Scrawler with a cone of blue energy, which encased the side of the Scrawler facing Miguel in ice. Then a searing pain emanated through the Entity, causing to howl in pain for the first time. It could no longer feel the Scrawler or see through his eyes. It looked through the eyes of Miguel to see that the Gabriella had come up behind the Scrawler and done something to sever its connection to him. Enraged, it order Katherine to make haste to the alley while it checked on the other fights.
The Catelyn stood over the Markus, her sight and hearing restored. The Markus was covered in bites and scratches. He lay unconscious on the rooftop. The Catelyn may be standing, but it was clear that she was also injured. But there would be time for healing later.
The White Scales held his opponent against the floor, a hand wrapped around his throat. The entity could see frost spreading across the Joshuah as he clawed at the hand, misty breath coming out in gasps. Suddenly, the White Scales felt great fear. It turned to see an ominous figure wrapped in black energy. The figure shot out a beam that hit the White Scales in the chest. He could feel himself getting weaker as he fear grew greater. Not even the Entity could overcome the primal fear inside the body. Another bolt of energy slammed into the dragonborn, causing him to vomit and crumple to the floor. The White Scales barely had strength to raise a hand as a red haired boy pulled Joshuah to his feet. Joshuah gave the newcomer a confused look before crossing over to the dragonborn and knocking him unconscious.
The Entity had the Catelyn turn into a bird and go help the White Scales. Suddenly a single phrase drew its attention.
"It's done." The Barrymore said. Through the eyes of the Barrymore, the big yellow eye around him began to glow as the excitement in the Entity grew. Through the eyes of the Miguel, the symbol on the wall began to glow yellow, then a beam of light shot into the sky. Through the eyes of the Katherine, it watched as beam of light shot into the sky from all around her. Through the eyes of the Catelyn, the yellow beams pierced the sky. The beam turned into words. The words turned into lines. The lines turned into a giant eye the seemed to look over the campus and the surrounding region. The eye slowly closed and then began to reopen. But instead of the eye returning, a tear in the sky opened into a void.
For the first time, the creature felt something. A rush of air blew against it. Heat from the campus below warmed its flesh. It looked toward the source of this new sensation with as many eyes as it could. Light poured in through a crack in the void. A crack that steadily widened, allowing the creature to see more of what was on the other side.
It was a world of colors. Bright lights, green grasses, shadows that hugged everything, buildings of various colors and shapes. People. The humans came in so many sizes, shapes, and colors. All of them with their own unique information. All of them with their own stories. All of them with different views of the world around them. The creature wanted it all.
As the opening grew wider, more of the creature's eyes looked toward it. For the first time he could remember, he moved his body toward the unknown world before him.
